Family shocked over death of student in 'ragging'...

Gurgaon/New Delhi (IANS): A 19-year-old student who died after being allegedly ragged by drunken seniors was cremated in the Indian capital on Tuesday with distraught family members saying they had done a wrong by not taking action when he complained of harassment in his college.

"We should have called him back when he complained to us about ragging," said a relative of Aman Kachru, a brilliant student who died after being beaten by his seniors at a college in Himachal Pradesh..

Its only been days that the Indian legal system as passed the anti-ragging law and we have a death of a 19 yr old ....Is there any value for human life...law and order ....it simply saddens me...

Thank you for you posting. Aman Kachroo was my cousin sister's son. He was brilliant in every facet of life, from his studies, to his gentle and kind heart. He didn't deserve to be treated by his peers in such an evil way, and certainly didn't deserve to die. I am angered at those responsible which includes the students who ragged him, the school officials who ignored his complaints and the local police who dismissed his officially filed complaint. They should all be hanged. Anything less shall be no justice at all. Let's see if the the Great Indian Justice system has the guts to do what is right.

What has happened is most unfortunate but this happened because we tend to brush issues under the carpet.Shocking.............brutal.............murder.We shouldn't let aman's sacrifice go waste.Whosoever is involved be it the authorities or seniors should be brought to justice and the punishment given to them should serve as a detterent in future. And my heartfelt condolence to the family

The incident is very unfortunate..... We just cannot wait till the system changes.
The Supreme Court has clearly laid down laws against ragging... I cant understand why police are not taking proper steps... The parents themself can file case against the college in the higher court... Its better we take steps than to wait someone else... I just heard in one of news challen wherin Aman's father said "We will not let go our son's death waste"... I hope some NGO's would come forward and help the family...

I also got to know that the Madras Add. Solicitor General is filing an PIL(Public Interest Litigation) in HC and SC...

In India its the case of "justice delayed is justice denied" am glad people are looking at this more seriosuly and who has committed this crime is punished..a precedent has to be set

how can this happen even after so many laws? How can the authorities simply look the other way?

The entire nation is behind Aman,s family in this hour of tragedy.

The mental & physical torture which the boy underwent is too painful even to be thought about.
What thoughts he had in his mind when he was breathing his last.
God will not spare the murderers.

The Govt and the civil society should ensure that the culprits are hanged without trial.

Let all of us join the candle march on Sat 14th March 2009 at Jantar Mantar

Vellore Institute of Technology places all freshers in a separate hostel . Even verbal ragging is enough to expel a senior student .Hostel warden makes surprise inspection every night , in the initial days after opening . Wish all institutions take proactive steps like this and eliminate this menace .I have been through ragging and do not want my son to undergo the same .

After reading this comment i know i might face flak but this is really the way i think...let me make this very clear that i am in no way supporting ragging and i sincerely stand by the kachroo's in this tough time.No words or anything for that matter can correct their loss but i wish if they could read through these lines and may be understand what i wish to convey. All the four accused have been surely in their past as meritorious as aman was. has anyone stopped to think what made them behave this way ? i understand what they have done is unpardonable...but i urge people to think that if the practise of ragging is entrenched in the college from a long time as a recent report reveals these boys must have faced the same circumstances when they were freshers!may be they were beaten up even more brutally but it was their hard luck that they survived to see this day. WITH ALL MY REGARDS TO THE DEPARTED SOUL I WOULD LIKE TO QUESTION HIS PARENTS THAT HAD THIS NOT HAPPENED WONT AMAN HAVE BEEN STANDING AT THE PLACE OF THE SENIORS NEXT YEAR? Being a medical student i have followed this case from the very beginning and learnt that one of the accused had logded a complaint against ragging a few months back when he was a fresher. If by any chance the victims relatives happen to go by this comment or anyone who does can make them go through this i humbly request you to ponder upon the fact that the state of mind of the 4 accused must have not been very different from aman's after they have just got out of their ragging period. sir i am sure the guilty are remorseful and i urge you to act against the social evil and not against those who have also been targetted by this menace of ragging like your son.

We are all talking about a wonderful individual who was JUST GOING TO SCHOOL...and yet beaten to death...each and every year parents send there bright beautiful children to school to whom we as parents feel safe, but what happens gun shots and others like RAGGING that lead to blood shed of our children.

We need to pay closer attention to our children's surroundings. Most of us in higher offices will not talk to parents but will talk to dollar bills regardless of what country you come from or live in.

I oppose parents to set higher officials up in schools/children surroundings, even when everything is going ok (which is the best time) set them up...make up a situation of RAGGING...and try to pay them to shut up see what will happen...then when they buy in to it (u have a case)

Accused must be hanged in public in broad daylight. No mercy.

This is in response to Anonymous. Yes I do believe that the four boys went through torturous ragging when they were freshers. What happened to them was very wrong.BUT I must say that when they grew to become seniors they had two choices. The first was to take out all the anger they had inside them on unsuspecting innocent freshers just like they were themselves once. The second option was to realize that what happened to them was wrong and repeating the same will not make them feel better.

Why is the age of consent 18 ? why are 18 year olds considered mature enough to drink ? why are 18 year olds old enough to vote ?

From that age onwards we are considered adults. We are expected to make responsible decisions and are held accountable for them.
When these boys went to the Freshers hostel they knew that what they were doing was not permitted. They were Drunk. first mistake. They bribed the security guard.Second mistake. They lined up all of the freshers and started slapping them.Third mistake. They zeroed in on the biggest looking one, four against one. They beat him mercilessly .Biggest mistake.
At every point they had the chance to go back. They didn't. They knew what they had come for.
I can easily blame the students that tortured those seniors in their past for damaging their self respect and maybe a couple of bones here and there. BUT I cannot blame their past to take over their logic. Every one knows what is right and what is wrong. It is not upto our discretion. It is just wrong. They will pay for it.The state is taking care of that.

My family and I are not focusing on them. We cant really. Its the state Vs the Accused. We are focusing on eradicating ragging from the face of India.
